Launched on 5th November 2020, the Climate Science Research Programme Office (CSRPO), set up under the Centre for Climate Research Singapore, will drive Singapore’s National Climate Science Masterplan by:

  • Promoting alignment between research and national priorities
  • Strengthening local research capabilities in climate science
  • Facilitating the translation of scientific research to policy application

The work of the CSRPO will initially focus on five key research areas: sea level rise; water resources and flood management; biodiversity and food security; impact of warming trends on human health and the energy sector; and cross-cutting areas.

1. Sea Level Rise

  • Understand sea-level rise and extreme sea-level events around Singapore and the wider region

2. Impact of Climate Change on Water Resource and Flood Management

  • Understand how changing rainfall and temperature patterns will impact our water supply and drainage infrastructure
  • Study the impact of climate change on reservoir yield, drainage operations and plan against drought scenarios

3. Biodiversity and Food Security

  • Understand the impact of changing rainfall and temperature patterns on Singapore’s biodiversity and food security
  • Investigate the adaptation of flora/fauna impacted by higher temperatures and changing rainfall, and better understand risk of tree failure with future wind conditions
  • Study the impact of climate change on food imports and supply chain

4. Impact of Warming Trends on Human Health and the Energy Sector

  • Understand the impact of climate change on the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect extreme temperatures and human comfort/health
  • Study the impact of climate change on energy demand
  • Inform planning and design at street level
  • Improve energy efficiency of power generation plants

  • Translate climate science to policy application and adaptation planning for agencies
  • Lead in the drafting of Singapore’s Climate Science Research Master Plan
